In the aftermath of her father Robert Maxwell’s death in November 1991 and the catastrophic collapse of his business empire — which revealed he had stolen hundreds of millions of pounds from company pension funds — Ghislaine Maxwell relocated to New York City.
Ghislaine, who had been close to her father and accustomed to wealth and high-society access, found herself with diminished resources and a damaged family name in Britain. New York offered a fresh start.
By approximately 1992, she had established a romantic and business relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. He provided the financial foundation and social infrastructure she had grown accustomed to through her father; she provided social access and credibility — a well-educated, charming English socialite who could vouch for Epstein in elite circles.
The nature of their relationship evolved over time. They were romantically involved in the early-to-mid 1990s, though their relationship became more professional/transactional in later years. Throughout, Maxwell maintained a role as Epstein’s key social facilitator and — according to prosecutors and victim testimony — the primary recruiter and groomer of young women for his trafficking operation.
Maxwell’s 2021 conviction established legally that she had actively participated in Epstein’s crimes from at least 1994 through 2004.
