In March 2010, Virginia Giuffre — then still using her maiden name Virginia Roberts — filed a federal civil lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein seeking damages for the trafficking and sexual abuse she alleged she had experienced as a minor and young adult within his network.
The civil suit was one of the earlier direct federal legal challenges to Epstein following his 2008 state conviction. Giuffre’s lawsuit alleged she had been recruited into Epstein’s network at age 15 and had been trafficked to multiple powerful men over several years.
