Jeffrey Epstein Found Dead at Metropolitan Correctional Center
Jeffrey Epstein is found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan at approximately 6:30 AM on August 10, 2019. He is pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner later rules the death a suicide by hanging. Private medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden, hired by Epstein's brother Mark, determines the injuries are more consistent with homicidal strangulation. No criminal charges are ever filed related to Epstein's death.

The Discovery
At approximately 6:30 AM on August 10, 2019, guards at the Metropolitan Correctional Center found Jeffrey Epstein unresponsive in his cell.
He was transported to New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
MCC Failures
Subsequent investigation revealed:
- Two guards assigned to check on Epstein every 30 minutes had not done so for approximately 8 hours
- Guard Tova Noel had been sleeping; guard Michael Thomas had been browsing the internet
- Both guards fabricated entries in the SHU logbook claiming they had checked on Epstein
- Cameras in the facility had also experienced failures
Competing Medical Opinions
Dr. Barbara Sampson (NYC Chief Medical Examiner): Rules death a suicide by hanging.
Dr. Michael Baden (private, hired by Mark Epstein): Determines the pattern of injuries — including multiple fractures of the hyoid bone and other structures — is more consistent with homicidal strangulation than hanging.
Criminal Charges
Guards Noel and Thomas were charged with falsifying records (not homicide) in November 2019. Both pleaded guilty in 2021 with no prison time.
No charges were filed related to how Epstein died.
