Epstein's Estate Files for Bankruptcy in USVI — August 2019

Days after Jeffrey Epstein's death, representatives of his estate file documents in the U.S. Virgin Islands to begin organizing the estate's assets and liabilities. The estate — valued at approximately $577 million — becomes the primary mechanism through which victims would eventually receive compensation, with court-appointed co-executors managing the distribution process.

People Involved

In the weeks following Jeffrey Epstein’s death on August 10, 2019, legal representatives began the process of organizing his estate, which was formally administered through proceedings in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein had claimed legal domicile.

The Estate Structure

Epstein’s will, signed two days before his death, named two longtime associates as executors. Among his assets were extensive real estate holdings (five properties on Little Saint James Island, the Manhattan townhouse, the New Mexico ranch, and a Paris apartment), aircraft (a Boeing 727 and Gulfstream jets), financial accounts, and art collections.

Estimated Value

The estate was initially estimated at approximately $577 million based on an assessment prepared for court proceedings. The actual distributable value would depend on the outcome of civil claims filed against the estate by hundreds of victims.

USVI Administration

Because Epstein had listed himself as a USVI domiciliary — which had allowed him to access the territory’s Economic Development Commission tax program — his estate was primarily administered there, though it had connections to New York and Florida courts as well.

Victim Compensation Fund

Through negotiations with the estate’s co-executors, a Victim Compensation Program was eventually established. By 2021, approximately $125 million had been paid to settle more than 100 claims from victims. Additional state-level claims continued.

USVI Lawsuit and Settlement

The USVI government ultimately filed a civil lawsuit against the estate alleging that Epstein had used USVI-based entities for trafficking while enriching himself through local tax benefits. This suit resulted in a $105 million settlement paid to the USVI in 2023.
