2019: Epstein's First Civil Lawsuit Filed by Virginia Giuffre

On August 9, 2019 — the day before Epstein’s death at the MCC — Virginia Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell in the Southern District of New York. This lawsuit was among the most consequential civil actions connected to the Epstein case.

Giuffre alleged in the complaint that Maxwell had recruited her when she was 15 years old, groomed her, and trafficked her to Epstein and other powerful men. She identified specific incidents and specific people.

The timing coincided with Epstein still being alive (he died the following morning), and the lawsuit’s filing represented a direct public legal challenge that could not be suppressed by NDAs already in place — Giuffre had been fighting a legal battle for years to be able to speak publicly about her experiences.

The civil proceedings against Maxwell that followed the lawsuit produced extensive discovery material. Depositions — including Maxwell’s own depositions — generated documents that courts later ordered unsealed. These depositions became a primary source of documentary evidence in the case, and their contents (including flight manifests and contact lists) were eventually unsealed and reported on extensively.

The lawsuit was eventually settled confidentially. However, the discovery materials generated in the proceeding continued to have significant legal and reputational consequences for multiple individuals identified in the records.
