On July 23, 2019, approximately 17 days after his arrival at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, Jeffrey Epstein was found in his cell with injuries to his neck. The incident raised immediate questions about whether it was a suicide attempt or an assault.
Epstein was found by prison staff showing signs of injury. A cellmate, former police officer Nicholas Tartaglione who was awaiting trial on murder charges, was present at the MCC at the time. Tartaglione later denied any involvement in the incident.
Federal authorities did not definitively determine the cause of Epstein’s injuries — whether they were self-inflicted, caused by another person, or resulted from some other incident. The ambiguity of the event was itself a point of subsequent controversy.
Following the July 23 incident, Epstein was placed on suicide watch — a heightened monitoring protocol. This status led to 24-hour observation and removal of potential self-harm materials.
The most consequential aspect of the July 23 incident was not the incident itself but what happened next: after approximately two weeks on suicide watch, Epstein was removed from that status on July 29. The decision to remove him from suicide watch was made by MCC officials and Bureau of Prisons staff. Just 12 days later, he was found dead.
