On November 1, 2021, James Edward “Jes” Staley resigned as CEO of Barclays, one of the United Kingdom’s four largest banks. The resignation followed notification from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) of their preliminary conclusions regarding an investigation into how Staley had characterized his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Staley had led Barclays since 2015, having previously served as a senior executive at JPMorgan Chase where he had been the primary relationship manager for Epstein’s private banking accounts. When Epstein’s 2019 arrest renewed scrutiny of his associates, Barclays asked Staley to explain his connection to Epstein. Regulators subsequently investigated whether Staley gave an accurate account.
Their preliminary findings suggested he had not adequately disclosed the relationship. Staley resigned while stating he disagreed with the preliminary findings and intended to contest them, believing a full review would vindicate him.
The resignation was the first CEO departure from a major global bank directly resulting from the Epstein scandal and one of the most consequential professional casualties of the case for a living executive.
