Maxwell Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison — June 2022

On June 28, 2022, U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan sentenced Ghislaine Maxwell to 20 years in federal prison, following her December 2021 conviction on five of six counts of sex trafficking and related offenses.

The Sentencing

Judge Nathan’s sentence of 20 years — exceeding the prosecution’s request of at least 20 years but slightly below the statutory maximum that could have been sought — reflected a finding that Maxwell bore substantial personal responsibility for facilitating years of abuse against minors.

Maxwell’s Statement

At sentencing, Maxwell read a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and stating she now understood their pain. She did not acknowledge guilt in the terms prosecutors had presented or specifically confirm any of the acts described in the evidence.

Judge Nathan’s Reasoning

Judge Nathan found that Maxwell had played an essential role in enabling Epstein’s operation — not merely as an unknowing participant but as an active facilitator who used her social standing and skills to recruit, groom, and abuse victims. The judge found Maxwell’s sentence needed to reflect both the seriousness of the offenses and the need for deterrence.

Victim Impact Statements

Multiple survivors who had testified at trial or were otherwise connected to the case provided victim impact statements at sentencing, describing the lasting harm they had suffered and expressing their views about an appropriate sentence.

Maxwell’s Response

Maxwell appealed her conviction, challenging both the verdict and the sentence. Her appeal was denied by the Second Circuit in 2025.

Release Date

With good behavior credit, Maxwell’s sentence would expire in the early 2040s. She is housed at FCI Tallahassee in Florida.
