In November 2022, the estate of Jeffrey Epstein reached a 105 million dollar settlement with the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, resolving a civil lawsuit that had alleged the estate was liable for Epstein’s trafficking activities conducted on USVI territory.

The settlement required several significant structural measures beyond the monetary payment: the estate was required to sell Little Saint James island, with proceeds going to a USVI-based Victims’ Compensation Program (VCP); the USVI-based Epstein foundation was to be dissolved; and the estate agreed to cooperate with ongoing investigations.

The settlement was separate from and in addition to the federal Epstein Victims’ Compensation Program established in 2020. USVI Attorney General Denise George, who had filed the original lawsuit, was dismissed by the governor shortly after the settlement was finalizeda decision that drew controversy.
