In November 2023, JPMorgan Chase filed a lawsuit against James E. “Jes” Staley in connection with the bank’s long and ultimately costly relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The lawsuit came in the context of JPMorgan having already settled claims by the U.S. Virgin Islands and a class of Epstein victims for approximately $290 million in combined agreements earlier in 2023. JPMorgan’s legal theory was that Staley — as the executive who personally managed the Epstein relationship and served as his primary banking contact — had deceived the bank about the nature and extent of Epstein’s criminal activity.

The bank alleged that Staley had knowingly concealed information that, if disclosed, would have caused JPMorgan to terminate Epstein as a client years earlier than 2013, significantly limiting the bank’s exposure.

Staley denied the allegations. At the time of the lawsuit, he was separately navigating UK regulatory proceedings following his resignation from Barclays in 2021 over questions about his characterization of his Epstein relationship to that institution.

The lawsuit represented an unusual attempt by a major financial institution to shift liability for its own compliance failure onto an individual executive.
