Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan on August 10, 2019. The New York City Medical Examiner, Dr. Barbara Sampson, conducted the official autopsy and ruled the cause of death as suicide by hanging, with the manner of death as suicide.
The official findings included multiple fractures — breaks in the hyoid bone (a small bone in the neck) and fractures in the thyroid cartilage. Dr. Sampson acknowledged these fractures but concluded the totality of evidence supported a suicide finding.
Dr. Michael Baden’s examination: The Epstein family hired Dr. Michael Baden, a prominent forensic pathologist, to observe the autopsy and conduct an independent analysis. Baden later held a press conference stating his opinion that the injuries were more consistent with homicidal strangulation than suicide by hanging.
Specifically, Baden noted:
- The hyoid bone fracture: more common in manual strangulation than in suicidal hanging, particularly in older individuals
- Multiple fractures on both sides of the neck: also more characteristic of manual strangulation
- The fracture pattern: he argued was inconsistent with the type of ligature suspension present
Why the official ruling stands: Dr. Sampson has maintained her suicide ruling, noting that hyoid fractures do occur in hanging suicides (studies suggest 25-35% of hangings involve hyoid fractures) and that the totality of circumstances — the cell environment, the manner of death presentation, the overall finding — supported suicide.
The FBI investigated and found no evidence of third-party involvement. No charges were ever brought in connection with Epstein’s death.
The disagreement between the official ME and Baden has fueled persistent public skepticism without resolving into any definitive evidentiary finding.
