Jeffrey Epstein died on August 10, 2019, at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York City. The New York City Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson ruled the cause of death suicide by hanging.

An investigation found that two guards assigned to monitor Epstein’s tier were asleep and falsified logs to indicate they had performed checks.
The Alternative Finding
Dr. Michael Baden, a prominent forensic pathologist hired by Epstein’s brother Mark, examined the body independently and stated in October 2019 that the evidence was “more consistent with homicidal strangulation than suicidal hanging.”
Specific points Baden raised:
- Three fractures in the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage — injuries more commonly seen in strangulation than hanging
- The injuries were more typical of “a highly unusual suicide,” suggesting an alternative
Dr. Baden has maintained this position through 2026.
The Official Response
The NYCME stood by its suicide ruling. Prosecutors acknowledged unprecedented failures in surveillance and guard monitoring but maintained the official cause of death.
Two prison guards — Tova Noel and Michael Thomas — were charged with falsifying records. Their case was dismissed in 2021 after prosecutors stated they could not proceed to trial.
