When FBI agents raided Epstein’s nine-story Manhattan townhouse on July 6, 2019 (the day of his arrest), they found a safe containing multiple items. Among them was a false Austrian passport bearing Epstein’s photograph but a different name and listing a Saudi Arabian address. The document appeared to date from the 1980s.
What prosecutors did with it: The passport was immediately disclosed to the court in the bail hearing that followed Epstein’s arrest. In their memorandum opposing bail, prosecutors cited the passport as direct evidence that Epstein:
- Had previously operated under a false identity
- Had been able to travel internationally without detection
- Could potentially use such a document or similar means to flee if released
Judge Richard Berman cited the passport in his August 12, 2019 detention order denying bail, calling it one of multiple bases for concluding Epstein presented an exceptional flight risk.
