Question
How did Epstein get a job at Bear Stearns without a college degree?
Answer
Jeffrey Epstein’s entry into finance is one of the more unusual career trajectories in Wall Street history — particularly given that he lacked a college degree.
The Dalton School connection: After dropping out of both Cooper Union and NYU before completing degrees, Epstein worked as a math and physics teacher at the Dalton School, an elite private school in Manhattan, beginning in 1974. His headmaster at Dalton was Donald Barr — the father of future Attorney General William Barr.
The Bear Stearns opportunity: Through connections made at Dalton, Epstein was introduced to Alan C. Greenberg (“Ace” Greenberg), Bear Stearns’ chairman. The introduction appears to have been brokered by the father of a student Epstein taught. Impressed by Epstein’s mathematical aptitude and confident personality, Greenberg hired him in approximately 1976 as an entry-level options clerk.
The rapid ascent: Epstein advanced quickly despite his unconventional background, developing a reputation as a skilled if aggressive operator. Within approximately five years he had risen to limited partner status — a remarkable trajectory for someone without a degree.
His departure: Epstein was discharged from Bear Stearns in approximately 1981 following a regulatory inquiry related to borrowing violations involving clients. He then established his independent financial operation.
The broader lesson: Epstein’s Bear Stearns entry illustrates how social connections at elite institutions could substitute for formal credentials on Wall Street in the 1970s — and how his charm and intelligence were able to open doors that would otherwise have been closed.
