Adult Victims
Some victims were 18-22 when recruited or during the period of abuse. Federal trafficking law covers adults who are coerced or deceived, not just minors. The TVPA provides protection for adults subjected to force, fraud, or coercion.
The Grooming of Adults
For slightly older victims (18-22), grooming still involved:
- Creating financial dependency
- Building trust before escalation
- Isolation from other support systems
- Creating a sense that the arrangement was volitional
The Power Imbalance
Even for adult women, the power imbalance between Epstein (immensely wealthy, socially connected) and young women from modest backgrounds created a structural form of coercion that approximated the legal definitions.
