Criminal accountability in the Epstein case has been remarkably narrow relative to the documented scale of the operation. A summary of the criminal proceedings:
Jeffrey Epstein: Arrested July 2019, died August 2019 before trial. Case terminated.
Ghislaine Maxwell: Arrested July 2020, tried December 2021, convicted of five of six counts, sentenced to 20 years in federal prison in June 2022. Conviction affirmed on appeal in 2024.
MCC Guards Tova Noel and Michael Thomas: Indicted in November 2019 on charges of falsifying prison records. Charges were dropped in June 2021 after the DOJ determined it could not prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Jean-Luc Brunel: Arrested in France in December 2020 on sex crime charges. Died in Paris prison, February 2022, before trial.
Others: No other individual involved in Epstein’s trafficking operation — including recruiters, transport providers, or property managers other than Maxwell — has been federally charged and convicted.
Multiple women identified as key operatives — including Sarah Kellen, Nadia Marcinkova, Lesley Groff, and others — received immunity or non-prosecution agreements under the 2008 NPA even before formal charges could be brought.
The co-conspirator immunity provisions in the 2008 NPA and the federal charging decisions in 2019–2022 have left the vast majority of Epstein’s network without formal criminal accountability.
