The 2006 State Charges
In 2006, Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on state charges arising from the Palm Beach police investigation. The case was initially processed at the Palm Beach County level before being referred to federal authorities.
The 2008 Resolution
The state charges and the pending federal charges were resolved together through the 2008 NPA with the US Attorney and an associated state plea agreement. Epstein pleaded to two state charges and served 13 months in county jail on work release.
The 2019 Federal Arrest
On July 6, 2019, Epstein was arrested by SDNY at Teterboro Airport on a sealed federal indictment charging sex trafficking of minors and sex trafficking conspiracy.
The Single Resolution
Unlike the 2008 case, the 2019 charges were not resolved before trial Epstein died on August 10, 2019, 34 days after his arrest, before any plea or trial.
The Legal Consequence
Because Epstein died before conviction or acquittal, the 2019 case was dismissed as moot. No criminal conviction on federal trafficking charges was ever entered.
