How much did JPMorgan pay to settle Epstein-related lawsuits?

Question

How much did JPMorgan Chase pay to settle lawsuits related to its banking relationship with Jeffrey Epstein?

Answer

JPMorgan Chase settled two major lawsuits arising from its long-running banking relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, which lasted from the 1990s until 2013:

Victim class action settlement: $290 million agreed in June 2023. This settlement resolved a class action lawsuit brought by Epstein trafficking victims who argued that JPMorgan had continued processing suspicious transactions for Epstein — including payments to victims and to front companies — despite clear warning signs that should have triggered enhanced scrutiny or termination of the relationship.

U.S. Virgin Islands government settlement: $75 million agreed in October 2023. The USVI government argued that JPMorgan had enabled Epstein’s continued operation by processing funds that facilitated trafficking in the territory.

Total: Approximately $365 million.

JPMorgan did not admit liability in either settlement.

Internal accountability: JPMorgan’s own documents produced in litigation showed that internal compliance staff had raised concerns about the Epstein relationship on multiple occasions. A senior executive, Jes Staley (later chief executive of Barclays), had a close relationship with Epstein and had been among the internal advocates for maintaining the account. Email correspondence between Staley and Epstein later became central to investigation of Staley by UK financial regulators, leading to his departure from Barclays in November 2021.

Regulatory parallel: New York’s Department of Financial Services fined Deutsche Bank $150 million in 2020 for similar failures during the period when Epstein banked there (2013–2018). Deutsche Bank’s victim settlement was separately $75 million (2023).
