Question

Why did Prince Andrew give a BBC Newsnight interview and what happened after?

Answer

On November 16, 2019, Prince Andrew (Duke of York) gave an interview with BBC Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis, intended to address and put to rest questions about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre’s allegations against him.

Why he gave the interview: Andrew and his advisers believed that an interview would allow him to control the narrative about his Epstein connection — particularly given that Epstein’s death in August 2019 and Maxwell’s visibility had renewed scrutiny. The strategy was to get the questions out of the way and move on.

What he said: The interview produced several statements that were immediately seized upon as problematic:

  • He denied having met Virginia Giuffre — despite a photograph showing him with his arm around her when she was 17
  • He explained the photograph was “possible” but couldn’t account for his whereabouts, while claiming he spent the relevant evening at a Pizza Express in Woking (an alibi noted for its unusual specificity)
  • He claimed he couldn’t sweat — as a supposed explanation for why Giuffre’s account of him sweating during an alleged sexual encounter was impossible
  • He expressed no direct condemnation of Epstein and offered what critics characterized as insufficient empathy toward victims

The public reaction: The interview was instantly characterized by commentators, former palace staffers, and political figures as a public relations disaster of historic scale. Rather than putting questions to rest, it generated new scrutiny.

The consequences: Within three days, Andrew announced he was stepping back from royal duties “for the foreseeable future.” He was subsequently stripped of his military patronages and titles. He eventually reached a financial settlement with Virginia Giuffre in 2022.
