The Clinical Definition
In clinical psychology, pedophilia specifically refers to a sexual attraction to prepubescent children (generally under 11-12). This is the diagnostic definition in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
Epstein’s Pattern
Most documented Epstein victims were adolescents aged 13-18. If the attraction were primarily to this age group, the clinical term would be ‘ephebophilia’ (attraction to mid-to-late adolescents). This distinction is clinically meaningful but legally largely irrelevant.
The Legal Framework
Under federal and state law, what matters is the age of consent and the presence of coercion or payment. The legal category is not ‘pedophile’ but rather offenses involving minors sex trafficking, statutory rape, sexual battery of a minor.
The Colloquial Usage
In common usage, ‘pedophile’ is often used to describe any person who sexually abuses minors, regardless of the precise clinical age target. Colloquial usage in the Epstein case is widespread but technically imprecise.
