Epstein organized or co-organized scientific conferences, including one focused on string theory physics, that brought legitimate scientists to the island for academic meetings. Hawking’s visit was in this context.
Hawking’s Estate Response
After Hawking’s death in 2018 and the increased attention on the Epstein case, Hawking’s estate stated he attended a legitimate scientific conference and had no knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities.
The Critical Distinction
Being a passenger on Epstein’s aircraft to or from a scientific conference at his property is fundamentally different from being a guest at a trafficking event. Epstein hosted both legitimate scientific activities and criminal activities. Participants in the former were not necessarily participants in or aware of the latter.

Hawking’s presence at an island conference like the presence of many legitimate scientists at Harvard and MIT events was precisely the kind of cover Epstein’s platform provided. Legitimizing science events enabled the concealment of criminal activities at the same locations.
