Overview
In January 2020, the U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George filed a sweeping civil lawsuit against the Jeffrey Epstein estate. The suit alleged that Epstein used his USVI propertiesprimarily Little Saint James and Great Saint Jamesas the core infrastructure for a sex trafficking operation spanning decades.
Core Allegations
The USVI complaint alleged:
- Epstein used Little Saint James as a base for recruiting, grooming, and abusing minors
- He fraudulently obtained + million in EDC tax exemptions by misrepresenting his Southern Trust Company as a legitimate operating business
- His estate and associated entities perpetuated and profited from trafficking
- RICO violations through an ongoing criminal enterprise
Legal Theory
The USVI case was significant because it pursued RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) theory arguing the trafficking was not isolated misconduct but an organized ongoing enterprise. This legal framework allowed for treble damages.
The Settlement
The estate settled the USVI lawsuit in January 2022 for ** million** the single largest government settlement from the Epstein estate. The settlement funds were directed in part toward USVI community programs.
Aftermath: AG George’s Firing
One month after the settlement, USVI Governor Albert Bryan Jr. fired Attorney General Denise Georgetriggering widespread speculation that her aggressive pursuit of the case had created political enemies. George stated she was given no reason for her termination.
