Jeffrey Epstein was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York on July 6, 2019 — returning to federal custody after a decade of freedom following his 2008 state plea deal.
The indictment contained two counts:
Count One: Sex Trafficking of Minors. This charge alleged that from approximately 2002 to 2005, Epstein had engaged in sex trafficking of minors, enticing minor victims to travel and engage in commercial sex acts at his properties in Manhattan and Palm Beach.
Count Two: Conspiracy to Commit Sex Trafficking of Minors. This charge alleged Epstein conspired with others to commit the conduct described in Count One — targeting the network of recruiters and facilitators who helped operate his trafficking operation.
Each count carried a maximum sentence of fifteen years, for a combined statutory maximum of thirty years. Prosecutors sought pretrial detention, which was granted after an initial bail motion was denied by the court — a rare outcome under any circumstances that reflected the perceived severity and flight risk of the charges.
Epstein died on August 10, 2019, while held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan while awaiting trial. His death was officially ruled a suicide by hanging. With his death, the criminal charges against him were formally dismissed.
