Scientific and academic engagement:
Epstein’s most visible post-conviction activity was aggressive re-engagement with the scientific community:
- He continued to fund research programs and academic institutions
- He attended high-profile science conferences and events, including Edge Foundation events
- He donated to programs at MIT, Harvard, and other institutions — in some cases with full knowledge of his sex offender status ignored or downplayed
- He funded the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard under Martin Nowak and made subsequent donations reportedly through intermediaries
Social presence:
Despite his sex offender status, Epstein attended dinner parties, functions, and events populated by media executives, academics, and financial figures. His presence was documented at events in New York by multiple attendees.
Continued operation of properties:
His properties in New York, New Mexico, the US Virgin Islands, and Paris remained operational. Evidence from victim accounts and subsequent investigations indicates that trafficking continued at these properties after 2009, a possibility reflected in the fact that the 2019 SDNY indictment charged him with conduct continuing through 2004 at the earliest, but victim accounts described ongoing exploitation.
The Maxwell factor:
Ghislaine Maxwell remained in contact with Epstein through this period and was documented attending events with him publicly as late as 2014.
The reinvestigation:
It was Miami Herald investigative journalist Julie Brown’s 2018 series that fully re-broke the story of the 2008 NPA’s impropriety, leading directly to the SDNY reopening the case and the 2019 arrest.
