The State’s Role
Palm Beach County State Attorney Barry Krischer received the police investigation of Epstein. The police had built a case supporting multiple felony charges including lewd and lascivious battery on children.
What Krischer Did
Krischer’s office did not pursue the full case. Grand jury proceedings were set up in a way that critics characterized as structured to produce a limited outcome. Ultimately, Epstein was offered a state plea arrangement for a minor charge.
The Surrender to Federal
When Krischer’s office accepted less than police had built a case for, it created the situation in which federal authorities and specifically Alex Acosta negotiated the extraordinary NPA.
The Krischer Conflict Question
Critics have questioned whether Krischer faced pressures from the Palm Beach County establishment to go easy on Epstein. No direct evidence of improper influence has been found, but circumstantial patterns were noted.
The Legacy
The combination of Krischer’s state plea and Acosta’s federal NPA created the double-layer legal shield that gave Epstein more than a decade of effective immunity from the consequences of his crimes.
