What he claimed: Throughout his career, Epstein routinely implied or allowed others to believe he had more advanced academic credentials than he possessed. In various social and professional contexts he was described as having studied or worked in physics, mathematics, and finance at elite levels — descriptions that were exaggerated.
What he actually had: Genuine mathematical aptitude. His facility with numbers was recognized by those who worked with him. But his formal credentials — no college degree — would have barred him from virtually every elite finance or academic position if they had been scrutinized honestly.
How he got around it: He built his career through personal relationships rather than institutional credentials. Teaching at the Dalton School led to Bear Stearns; Bear Stearns led to meeting powerful people; meeting powerful people led to Wexner’s $46+ million in accounts under his management.
