Jeffrey Epstein died on August 10, 2019 at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York. The New York City medical examiner ruled the cause of death as hanging by suicide. That finding has been disputed on forensic grounds.
The Official Finding
Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson, after a thorough examination, ruled the death a suicide by hanging. Her office reviewed all available evidence and stood by the finding.
Dr. Michael Baden’s Contested Findings
Dr. Michael Baden, a prominent forensic pathologist retained by Epstein’s brother Mark, conducted an independent autopsy. He reported finding several hyoid bone fractures and other injuries that he argued were more consistent with homicidal strangulation than with hanging by suicide.
Specifically, Baden identified fractures in the left and right hyoid bones and the left thyroid cartilage. Baden stated that in his professional experience, this pattern of injury occurred more often in strangulation than in hanging, particularly in older individuals.
Medical Examiner’s Response
The official medical examiner’s office acknowledged the fractures but maintained that such injuries can occur in suicidal hangings, especially in older men (Epstein was 66). Sampson held to the suicide ruling.
Circumstances Raising Questions
Independent of forensic evidence, several circumstances were cited as suspicious:
- Epstein had been taken off suicide watch roughly two weeks earlier despite prior apparent suicide attempt
- Both guards assigned to watch him were asleep and failed to check on him for several hours
- Surveillance cameras outside his cell reportedly malfunctioned
- He had recently signed a new will, two days before his death
- His death eliminated the most prominent cooperating witness who could have named associates
Prosecutorial Outcome
Two MCC guards — Tova Noel and Michael Thomas — were indicted in 2019 for falsifying prison records. In 2021 the Justice Department dropped the charges, citing difficulty in proving criminal intent.
Official Status
The ruling remains suicide. No criminal charges related to Epstein’s death itself were filed. The FBI investigated and did not bring charges.
