The Hospital
Following discovery of Epstein unresponsive in his cell, he was transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Lower Manhattan, where he was pronounced dead.
The Autopsy
The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted the official autopsy. Additionally, Dr. Michael Baden, retained by Epstein’s brother, was permitted to observe the autopsy.
The Death Certificate
The official death certificate listed cause of death as ‘suicide by hanging’ and manner of death as ‘suicide.’ The document was signed by Dr. Barbara Sampson.
The Burial
Epstein was subsequently buried. Reports indicated his remains were interred in Palm Beach, Florida. The burial was private, attended by family. His brother Mark Epstein arranged the funeral.
The Pathological Dispute
After the burial, Dr. Baden went public with his view that the injury patterns were inconsistent with hanging. The official death certificate was not amended despite the competing analysis.
