Question
What happened to Epstein’s New York townhouse?
Answer
Jeffrey Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse at 9 East 71st Street — one of the largest private residences in New York City, a nine-story limestone mansion valued at over $50 million — was sold by his estate in 2022 for approximately $51 million.
The property had been given to Epstein by his longtime patron Leslie Wexner in the early 1990s. At the time, the transfer was described charitably by Wexner as part of a broader arrangement in which Epstein managed his financial and personal affairs. Post-arrest scrutiny raised significant questions about how and why Wexner transferred such an extraordinarily valuable asset to Epstein.
The townhouse was a scene of significant investigative and legal interest. FBI agents searched the property following Epstein’s July 2019 arrest and recovered numerous items, including photographs of apparent relevance to the investigation.
After Epstein’s death in custody in August 2019, the property became an asset of his estate, which was administered by co-executors Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn. The proceeds from its sale were directed into the pool of assets from which victims sought compensation through the Epstein Victims’ Compensation Program.
