One of the more discussed coincidences in the Epstein case is the connection between Jeffrey Epstein’s early career and Donald Barr — father of William Barr, who served as U.S. Attorney General when Epstein was in federal custody.
Donald Barr and the Dalton School:
Donald Barr was headmaster of the Dalton School, an elite Manhattan private school, from 1964 to 1974. During a period overlapping with his tenure, Jeffrey Epstein was hired to teach mathematics and physics at Dalton — notably without a college degree, which was unusual even at a private school.
The connection is significant: Epstein entered the elite New York social world through Dalton, which eventually led to his Bear Stearns connection (through a Dalton family), which eventually led to the path toward Wexner and his fortune.
Bill Barr as Attorney General:
Bill Barr served as U.S. Attorney General from February 2019 — the same year Epstein was arrested in July 2019. Barr was therefore the head of the Department of Justice during Epstein’s pretrial detention and at the time of Epstein’s death.
After Epstein’s death, Barr stated that he was “appalled” and that the circumstances were “suspicious,” and ordered the DOJ Inspector General to investigate. Critics argued that Barr did not remove himself from oversight of the investigation despite the at-minimum perceived conflict stemming from his father’s connection to Epstein’s early career.
The theory and its limitations:
The Barr-Epstein connection through Donald Barr has fueled extensive speculation about whether Bill Barr had any influence on circumstances of Epstein’s death or the investigation into it. No evidence has established any direct role by Barr in Epstein’s prison conditions or death.
The connection is coincidental in documented terms — a 1970s Dalton connection between a headmaster who is later a deceased parent of an AG who oversees a case involving someone that headmaster hired 45+ years earlier.
