What was Ghislaine Maxwell's TerraMar Project?

What TerraMar Was

The TerraMar Project was a nonprofit organization founded by Ghislaine Maxwell around 2012. Its stated mission was ocean conservation and advocacy for international ocean governance.

The Activities

TerraMar produced some educational videos, registered with the United Nations as an NGO, and had Maxwell speak at UN events about ocean conservation. The substance of its programmatic activities was limited.

The Social Function

Analysts and critics characterized TerraMar primarily as a social and reputational vehicle providing Maxwell with a platform for public speaking, UN accreditation, and a respectable public identity during a period when she needed to maintain social standing.

The Dissolving

TerraMar Project dissolved in July 2019, days after Epstein’s re-arrest. The abrupt closure following Epstein’s arrest reinforced the view that the organization was primarily a Maxwell social platform rather than a substantive organization.

The Passport Application Use

Maxwell’s UN accreditation through TerraMar gave her access to UN facilities and events. This access was relevant to later discussions of her ability to move in elite international circles.
