Stephen Hawking, the celebrated theoretical physicist, attended at least one conference organized by Jeffrey Epstein on Little Saint James island in 2006 — one year before the federal non-prosecution agreement was negotiated.
Hawking was among a group of prominent scientists who attended what was presented as a private science conference on the island. Photographs showed him on the island. This attendance became notable after Epstein’s 2019 arrest because it placed one of the world’s most famous scientists at the central location of Epstein’s alleged abuse operation.
Hawking’s office issued statements indicating that he had attended as part of a scientific gathering organized through university connections and had been unaware of the abuse allegations that were the subject of Florida police investigation at that time. The conference took place in 2006 — the same year Palm Beach Police had already been investigating Epstein.
Epstein used his connections to scientific gatherings at the island and his other properties as key components of his philanthropic reputation-building. Hawking’s presence, like those of other prominent scientists, lent the island gatherings a veneer of intellectual legitimacy.
