Despite lacking a completed university degree, Epstein was hired as a math and physics teacher at the Dalton School, an elite private school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, in 1973. He was approximately 20 years old when he was hired, making him unusually young for a faculty position.
At Dalton, Epstein’s mathematics ability was reportedly impressive enough to compensate for his credentialing gaps. He used the Dalton position as a crucial networking vehicle — the parents of Dalton students included some of New York’s wealthiest families, providing Epstein early access to elite social networks well above his economic station.
His connection at Dalton to the father of one of his students directly led to his introduction to Bear Stearns, where he joined in 1976 — the career pivot that launched his financial trajectory. The precise parent who made this introduction was Alan Greenberg, then CEO of Bear Stearns, whose son attended Dalton and who reportedly was impressed by Epstein’s mathematical abilities.
