Question
What was the Epstein estate worth and how was it distributed?
Answer
Jeffrey Epstein’s estate was valued at approximately $577 million at the time of his death in August 2019, according to probate filings in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The estate included real estate holdings (including Little Saint James, Zorro Ranch, and the New York townhouse), aircraft, automobiles, art, cash and securities, and financial interests.
The estate was administered by executors Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn, who had served as Epstein’s attorney and financial advisor respectively. Shortly before his death, Epstein had signed a new will and transferred assets into a trust registered in the USVI — a restructuring that USVI authorities and victims’ attorneys scrutinized as a potential mechanism for shielding assets from claims.
The primary distribution mechanism for victim claims was the Jeffrey Epstein Victims Compensation Program, established in 2020, which ultimately paid over $121 million to more than 150 claimants. Participation required waiving further civil claims against the estate.
Additional settlements with financial institutions — JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank — added to the total resources available for victim-related claims, though those settlements were with the banks themselves rather than the estate.
Real estate was sold: Little Saint James was sold to a development company. The New York townhouse was sold. Zorro Ranch was listed for sale. The estate was gradually liquidated over several years.
