Epstein’s Harvard Donations
Jeffrey Epstein donated at least .5 million to Harvard University, making him one of the institution’s more significant individual donors in certain scientific areas. The donations occurred primarily between 1998 and 2007 straddling his 2008 sex offender conviction.
The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics
Epstein’s signature Harvard gift was the founding of the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (PED) in 2003, directed by mathematician Martin Nowak. The program studied the mathematical basis of evolution and attracted top researchers.
Epstein reportedly paid:
- ~.5 million directly to Harvard/PED
- Additional funds through his foundations
What Did Harvard Do With the Money?
Harvard kept the donations and maintained the PED even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction. It was only after the 2019 rearrest and subsequent public pressure that Harvard:
- Condemned accepting the donations as a mistake
- Promised to donate an equivalent amount to organizations supporting survivors of sexual assault
- Commissioned an independent review (the Khurana Report) examining how Epstein maintained access
Post-Death Return
In 2020, Harvard announced it would give ,000 to organizations helping sex trafficking survivors. Critics argued this was inadequate compared to the reputational and institutional damage Epstein’s relationship caused and the millions Harvard retained in program infrastructure built with his money.
