What was the outcome of JP Morgan's Epstein-related lawsuits?

The Lawsuits

JPMorgan Chase faced two significant civil lawsuits connected to Epstein:

1. U.S. Virgin Islands v. JPMorgan Chase (filed 2022)

  • Alleged JPMorgan knowingly benefited from Epstein’s trafficking by maintaining his accounts
  • Cited JPMorgan’s continued banking relationship with Epstein despite internal red flags
  • Filed by USVI AG Letitia James

2. Class Action by Victims (consolidated 2022-2023)

  • Epstein victims brought class claims through their attorneys
  • Similar theory: JPMorgan enabled the trafficking operation by providing financial infrastructure

The Settlements

In June 2023, JPMorgan settled both cases:

  • USVI settlement: million
  • Victim class settlement: million
  • Total: million

JPMorgan did not admit liability in either settlement.

The Internal Emails

During litigation, internal JPMorgan emails emerged showing that Jes Staley (then an executive, later Barclays CEO) was aware of Epstein’s 2008 conviction and continued to advocate for maintaining the banking relationship. The bank terminated Epstein’s account in 2013years after his conviction.

Significance

The JPMorgan settlements established a precedent for financial institution liability in trafficking casesholding that knowingly maintaining accounts for documented sex offenders can constitute civil liability for trafficking facilitation.
