What Was TerraMar?
The TerraMar Project was a non-profit organization founded by Ghislaine Maxwell in 2012, ostensibly dedicated to ocean conservation and advocacy for high seas governance. TerraMar’s stated mission was protecting the international ocean commons.
What It Did
TerraMar:
- Organized events and conferences on ocean conservation
- Secured accreditation as an NGO with the United Nations
- Gave Maxwell a platform as an “ocean ambassador” and environmental advocate
- Operated primarily as a presence online and at events rather than through direct conservation work
Its Purpose
Critics and investigators have suggested TerraMar served primarily as:
- A platform for Maxwell to maintain social credibility and connections after her association with Epstein had become problematic
- An access mechanism to UN and international diplomatic circles
- A “cover story” for Maxwell’s activities
The Shutdown
TerraMar was shut down in July 2019, just days after Jeffrey Epstein’s arrest on July 6, 2019. The abrupt timing raised immediate questions. Maxwell’s location became unknown shortly afterward; she was found in New Hampshire by FBI agents in July 2020.
Legacy
TerraMar gave Maxwell approximately seven years of activity as a public environmental advocate. Its abrupt closure, timed precisely to Epstein’s arrest, became one of the more striking details in the broader Maxwell story.
