Background
Anne Marie Villafaña was a career federal prosecutor in the Miami office of the U.S. Attorney’s Southern District of Florida. She handled complex sex crimes cases and began working the Epstein case after Palm Beach police referred it to federal authorities in 2007.
The Case She Built
Over roughly two years, working with FBI investigators, Villafaña assembled evidence including:
- Testimony from dozens of victims
- Corroborating physical evidence from Epstein’s Palm Beach home
- Financial records documenting payment patterns to victims
- Witness accounts of the recruitment network
She recommended federal sex trafficking charges that could have resulted in decades of imprisonment.
The Overrule
The NPA negotiated by then-U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta effectively overruled Villafaña’s charging recommendation. The terms18 months county jail, work release, immunity for co-conspiratorswere far below what she had sought.
Villafaña’s Email
A 2007 email from Villafaña to Epstein’s attorneysrevealed through court proceedingssuggested she was under pressure to accommodate the defense team’s requests at various stages of the negotiation. Victims’ attorneys have cited this email as evidence of improper process.
Later Recognition
Villafaña was later recognized by victims’ advocates as the government lawyer who had done the most serious work on the Epstein case. After the 20182019 revival of the case, her role was acknowledged in press accounts. She continued as a career DOJ prosecutor.
