James E. “Jes” Staley is an American banker who served as a Managing Director and head of Private Banking at JPMorgan Chase before becoming CEO of Barclays plc (2015-2021). He is one of the most significant financial figures named in Epstein-related proceedings.
JPMorgan Role: At JPMorgan, Staley served as the relationship manager most closely associated with the Epstein account. Extensive email communications between Staley and Epstein spanning years and discussed during JPMorgan litigation showed Staley maintained a close personal and professional relationship with Epstein.
Significance: Prosecutors and plaintiffs argued that Staley’s close relationship with Epstein enabled the account to remain at JPMorgan longer than it should have, given multiple internal compliance red flags. His communications were central evidence in the 2023 USVI lawsuit against JPMorgan.
Barclays Departure: Staley left Barclays in November 2021 following an investigation by UK financial regulators (FCA/PRA) into his characterization of his relationship with Epstein. The Barclays board received findings that differed from how Staley had described the relationship.
Legal Status: The JPMorgan litigation included claims against Staley personally. He denied wrongdoing but became one of the most directly named financial executives in Epstein accountability proceedings.
