Robert Maxwell (born Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch, 19231991) was a Czech-born British media mogul who owned Mirror Group Newspapers, Macmillan Publishers, and other media properties, building one of the largest media empires in the UK. He was also a Labor Member of Parliament. He died in November 1991 after falling or jumping from his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, near the Canary Islands under circumstances that remain disputedofficial findings suggested accidental drowning, but murder theories have persisted. After his death, investigations revealed he had fraudulently looted approximately 460 million from employee pension funds. Ghislaine moved to New York shortly after his death.
