Death and Aftermath

Why was Epstein at MCC and not a different facility?

The Standard Practice

Defendants arrested on SDNY charges are held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan as pretrial detainees. MCC is the BOP facility designated for this purpose.

Epstein’s Arrival

Epstein arrived at MCC following his July 6, 2019 arrest. He was a pretrial detainee not convicted and therefore held at a facility designed for this purpose.

The High-Profile Inmate Question

MCC held high-profile defendants including El Chapo (Joaquín Guzmán), who was held there before his 2019 conviction. The facility was known to have capacity for high-security housing.

The Request for Alternative Placement

Epstein’s attorneys made efforts to arrange house arrest in his Manhattan mansion. The bail request was denied twice by Judge Berman. Without bail, MCC was the only available option.

The Facility Conditions

MCC was a known problem facility. Its chronic understaffing, aging infrastructure, and equipment failures were documented in reports before Epstein’s arrival. Whether he could have been held at a better-maintained facility under similar security constraints is a question that oversight investigations raised.
