Question
Why did JPMorgan sue Jes Staley?
Answer
JPMorgan Chase filed a lawsuit against former executive James E. “Jes” Staley in 2023 as part of the broader legal fallout from the bank’s long relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
JPMorgan’s lawsuit against Staley arose in the context of the bank facing its own legal liability. The U.S. Virgin Islands and a class of Epstein victims had sued JPMorgan, alleging that the bank knowingly facilitated Epstein’s sex trafficking by providing him financial services and ignoring red flags about his activity.
JPMorgan ultimately settled those claims for approximately $290 million in settlements. As part of its legal defense, JPMorgan argued that it had been deceived by Staley, who had served as a senior private banking executive at the firm and was Epstein’s primary relationship manager at JPMorgan. The bank alleged that Staley had concealed from the institution information about Epstein’s criminal conduct that would have led the bank to terminate the relationship much sooner.
JPMorgan’s lawsuit against Staley sought to hold him responsible for damages the bank paid out as a result of the Epstein relationship, characterizing him as a knowing participant in concealing Epstein’s activities from the bank’s compliance and legal functions.
Staley denied the allegations, and the litigation proceeded into 2024.
