The Requirement
Following his 2008 Florida conviction, Epstein was required under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) to register in New York state, where his Manhattan residence was located.
The Level 3 Classification
A New York court classified Epstein as a Level 3 sex offender the highest risk tier under SORA. This classification required the most rigorous reporting conditions.
The Compliance Issues
Epstein’s compliance with New York registration requirements was contested. He attempted to challenge the Level 3 classification. Eventually he registered, but the question of full compliance particularly regarding notifying authorities when traveling remained.
The 2019 Prosecution Note
At the time of his 2019 arrest, prosecutors noted his sex offender registration status as part of the grounds for detention.
Post-Death Status
Epstein’s registration was nullified by his death. The New York database removed his entry following his death in August 2019.
