Research funding is scarce and often restricted. Epstein offered unrestricted grants money that could be used as the scientist chose, without the supervision of peer review or foundation requirements. This was extraordinarily attractive.

Epstein’s dinners and gatherings brought together Nobel laureates, prominent professors, and innovative thinkers in an exclusive setting. Being invited was itself a mark of perceived distinction.
The Science Patron Identity
Epstein cultivated a specific identity: a financially successful man who had turned to intellectual patronage as his greatest passion. He spoke intelligently about science, asked good questions, and seemed genuinely interested.
The Post-2008 Continuation
Many scientists maintained their relationships after 2008 when Epstein was a convicted registered sex offender. This continuation which caused the most reputational damage reflects a failure of judgment common to institutional environments where financial support is highly valued.
The Lesson
The Epstein case became a case study in the institutional failure to apply normal risk and reputational assessment to financially valuable relationships. Universities have since strengthened donor vetting processes partly in response.
