Why did Epstein’s 2019 bail request get denied?

Following his arrest on July 6, 2019, Jeffrey Epstein sought pretrial release on bail. Southern District of New York prosecutors opposed bail vigorously, and the court denied the motion, ordering Epstein held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending trial.
The court found that Epstein represented an extreme flight risk for several reasons:
Financial resources. Epstein’s wealth — approximately $577 million — rendered any conventional bail amount essentially meaningless as a deterrent. He had sufficient assets to forfeit a large bail sum and still be comfortable abroad.
International connections. Epstein had relationships with individuals in dozens of countries, maintained foreign bank accounts and foreign property, and had the networks necessary to establish a comfortable life outside U.S. jurisdiction.
Private aviation. His fleet of aircraft could move him across international borders before authorities could act on any violation of bail conditions.
Fraudulent travel document. Prosecutors presented the Austrian passport found in his townhouse during the bail hearing — demonstrating he had historical access to false identity documents.
Severity of charges. The sex trafficking charges carried significant prison time, increasing the incentive to flee rather than face trial.
Epstein’s legal team proposed an elaborate home confinement arrangement including ankle monitoring and private security guards. The court rejected this proposal as insufficient to adequately mitigate the identified flight risks.
