The Decision
In January 2022, Buckingham Palacewith the agreement of King Charles (then Prince of Wales) and Queen Elizabeth IIannounced that Prince Andrew, Duke of York, would:
- Relinquish all honorary military titles and royal patronages
- No longer use the style “His Royal Highness (HRH)” in any official capacity
- Cease performing royal duties
Why It Happened
The decision came after U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled in January 2022 that Virginia Giuffre’s civil lawsuit against Andrew could proceed. The ruling followed Andrew’s failed motion to have the case dismissed, heavily criticized by legal observers.
The Palace concluded that Andrew continuing as a working royal while defending a U.S. sex abuse lawsuit was untenableboth for the institution and in light of Queen Elizabeth’s personal directive.
The Settlement (February 2022)
Within weeks of losing his titles, Prince Andrew settled Giuffre’s civil lawsuit for a reported figure between million and million (the exact amount was not disclosed). The settlement included no admission of liability. Prince Andrew continued to deny all allegations.
Broader Impact
Andrew’s stripping of titles was seen as an acknowledgment by the monarchy that his continued association with royal duties was incompatible with the public attention to the Epstein case. He has not returned to public royal duties since.
