The Current Status of the Investigation
As of February 2026, no additional criminal charges have been filed against individuals who participated in Epstein’s trafficking network beyond:
- Ghislaine Maxwell — Convicted 2021, sentenced 2022
- The original 2008 NPA in Florida, which covered Epstein only
What Prosecutors Have Said
SDNY prosecutors stated at Maxwell’s sentencing in June 2022 that the investigation remains open. They specifically noted their interest in identifying the individuals who abused the victims that Maxwell recruited and trafficked.
Who The Co-Conspirators Could Be
The Maxwell trial established that Epstein and Maxwell did not operate alone — they had “associates” and a “network.” Prosecutors referenced clients who paid to abuse victims or who received access to victims as a form of social currency. These individuals have not been publicly named by prosecutors.
Barriers to Prosecution
Statute of limitations: Many of the alleged crimes occurred 20–30 years ago. While Congress has extended statutes of limitations for child sex trafficking, some crimes may be time-barred.
Evidence: Epstein’s death and Maxwell’s refusal to cooperate have limited direct evidence. Many witnesses can only testify about what they personally experienced.
Political will: Critics argue that identifying and prosecuting elite clients would require extraordinary political will given who those clients may be.
Maxwell’s Potential Cooperation
Maxwell reportedly possesses significant knowledge about Epstein’s clients. She has not publicly offered to cooperate with prosecutors. One theory is that cooperation could reduce her sentence, but she has not pursued this publicly.

While criminal prosecution has stalled, civil litigation continues to move forward:

- Civil suits against named individuals continue in various courts

Legal experts note that the “co-conspirators” question is the most significant unresolved issue of the entire case. The Maxwell conviction established that trafficking occurred — but it did not name the buyers.
