Who Is Ehud Barak

Ehud Barak is one of Israel’s most decorated soldiers and prominent politicians. Born in 1942, he rose through the ranks of the Israel Defense Forces to become Chief of Staff before transitioning to a political career. He served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1999 to 2001 and later as Defense Minister under Benjamin Netanyahu from 2007 to 2013. Internationally recognized as a security expert and statesman, Barak also built a second career as a private investor and adviser after leaving government.

Relationship with Jeffrey Epstein

Barak’s connection to Jeffrey Epstein became public knowledge through a combination of investigative reporting and court documents. The two men were reportedly introduced through mutual acquaintances in elite financial and philanthropic circles. Barak acknowledged the friendship and confirmed that Epstein had invested approximately $1 million in Carbyne, a public-safety technology startup that Barak co-founded. The investment made Epstein a financial backer of Barak’s post-government business venture, creating a direct financial entanglement that drew significant scrutiny.

Photographs published in 2019 by the Daily Mail showed Barak entering a New York building that housed an apartment owned by Epstein, with young women present in the lobby. Barak stated that he had visited the building in connection with a project involving other investors and denied any knowledge of wrongdoing. He was one of very few prominent political figures to comment at length on his association with Epstein rather than remaining silent.

Public Statements and Defense

Unlike many of Epstein’s associates who retreated from public comment after Epstein’s 2019 arrest, Barak gave multiple interviews in which he acknowledged the friendship while strongly denying any involvement in or awareness of Epstein’s crimes. He described Epstein as an intelligent man interested in scientific and geopolitical discussions and said that his visits to Epstein’s properties were social and professional in nature. He maintained that he had no knowledge of the abuse that victims described occurring in those same properties.

Barak’s defense drew criticism from victims’ advocates and journalists who noted the inconsistency between Epstein’s documented behavior and the portrait of an intellectual salon that prominent associates frequently offered.

Carbyne and Financial Ties

The technology company Carbyne — which provides emergency response software linking callers to dispatchers and first responders — became a focal point of scrutiny because of Epstein’s stake in it. Critics questioned whether Epstein’s investment represented a genuine commercial interest or served as a means to build influence with a former head of government. The company continued operating after Epstein’s death and Barak remained involved in its leadership.

The Carbyne connection was significant because it demonstrated that Epstein’s relationships with political figures were not purely social. He was actively placing money into ventures run by former world leaders, creating financial dependencies that made those associations more complex to publicly disavow.
