Background

Isabel Maxwell was born in 1950, one of the nine children of Robert Maxwell and Betty Maxwell. She and her twin sister Christine are the oldest of Robert Maxwell’s children. Isabel pursued a career in the technology sector and co-founded the McKinley Group, which operated search and internet directory services in the early days of the commercial internet, including the Magellan search engine. She subsequently worked in other technology and internet ventures.

Like all of the Maxwell siblings, Isabel was shaped by the dominant personality of her father Robert, and by the trauma of his 1991 death and the immediate revelation of his massive pension fund fraud. The family scattered after the scandal, with various siblings rebuilding their lives in different countries and careers.

Connection to Epstein

Isabel Maxwell’s primary connection to the Epstein case is through her sister Ghislaine. Following Ghislaine Maxwell’s arrest in July 2020 and subsequent prosecution, Isabel became one of the most vocal commentators publicly speaking in Ghislaine’s defense.

Isabel gave media interviews in which she expressed her view that Ghislaine was being used as a scapegoat for Epstein’s crimes now that Epstein himself was dead. She challenged aspects of the prosecution’s narrative, disputed characterizations of Ghislaine’s role, and argued that her sister had not received a fair process. She maintained contact and communication with Ghislaine during her pretrial detention.

Isabel’s public advocacy for her sister included interviews with prominent media outlets and characterizations of the prosecution as influenced by the need for a public accountability figure given the absence of Epstein.

Aftermath

Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in June 2022. Isabel continued to advocate publicly for her sister’s appeal and maintained that the verdict was unjust. She has remained in contact with Ghislaine during her incarceration at FCI Tallahassee. Isabel’s public profile during the trial period made her the most visible of the Maxwell siblings in the media coverage of the case.
