Michael Baden

Background

Dr. Michael Baden is one of the most prominent forensic pathologists in the United States. He served as Chief Medical Examiner of New York City and has been involved in some of the most high-profile forensic investigations in modern American history, including the re-examination of John F. Kennedy’s autopsy, the O.J. Simpson case, and the investigation of Phil Spector.

Observation of Epstein’s Autopsy

When Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his Metropolitan Correctional Center cell on August 10, 2019, the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office (under Dr. Barbara Sampson) scheduled an autopsy. Epstein’s brother Mark hired Baden to attend as an independent observer.

Disputed Findings

Based on his observations, Baden publicly stated that Epstein’s injuries were inconsistent with suicide by hanging and more consistent with homicidal strangulation. Specifically, he cited:

• Fractures in multiple neck bones — including the left and right thyroid cartilage and the left hyoid bone
• These fractures, Baden argued, are uncommon in suicide hangings (especially in the type of hanging Epstein would have been capable of in his cell) but more common in manual strangulation
• Hemorrhaging in the eyes, which he indicated could be consistent with strangulation

The official OCME ruling by Dr. Sampson, issued in August 2019, concluded that Epstein had died by suicide by hanging.

Ongoing Debate

Baden maintained his position in multiple media appearances and interviews through 2019–2023. He published detailed analyses of the physical evidence.

The debate over Epstein’s cause of death remains unresolved in the public sphere. While the official ruling stands as suicide, no camera footage of the relevant period was available, two guards fell asleep and failed to check on Epstein, and Epstein had previously been taken off suicide watch — each of which fueled continued suspicion.

Baden’s dissent represents one principal strand of credible, professional challenge to the official finding.
